Family Carers Ireland (FCI) held a major forum in Kilkenny on 13th May 2019, with a large group attending from across Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford.  There are some 350,000 carers in Ireland, and FCI estimates that 75,000 of those are struggling to cope, through lack of support services.  FCI is looking for a government grant of €3.2 million to help fund emergency respite, individual support, training, networking and information and advocacy.

Independent Kilkenny County Councillor and MEP South candidate attended the event, and pledged her full support for Family Carers Ireland.

“At present, there is no legislation in place to support carers” said Cllr Gardner.  “There seems to be a constant battle for assessments, school placements and carer supports.  Carers do incredible work 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, but they have largely been forgotten about by our government.  Carers provide an unbelievable, unrivalled service, and should be supported, not shunned.  Some limited help and assistance is available in certain counties, there is no consistency across the country.”

Cllr Gardner continued “Carers save the Irish state billions of Euros each year by looking after our most vulnerable citizens in their own homes.  Surely it’s about time we ensured that every carer across Ireland receives full, equitable and practical support for the wonderful work they do.”
