“LET’S TAX PLASTIC ELECTION POSTERS!”

MEP South & Local Election Candidate Cllr Breda Gardner has suggested a novel solution to end the scourge of plastic election posters currently blighting the country. “I’d like to see the introduction of a tax on plastic posters used at elections. The plastic bag levy had a really positive effect on the environment in Ireland, and I believe a tax on single use plastic election posters could have the same impact.”
Cllr Gardner proposes a sliding scale of charges. “I’d like to see a charge of €5.00 or even €20.00 per poster for the first 150, rising to €50.00 per poster after that. The €50.00 charge would have the added benefit of potentially bankrupting the worst offenders. Naturally, all revenues raised would be ring-fenced for local environmental projects.”
On a more serious note, Cllr Gardner, who is running a plastic poster free campaign, adds, “In March 2019, our MEP’s voted to ban single use plastics, yet a month later they plastered the whole country with thousands of their ghastly plastic posters. Sadly, even the Green Party were not immune from this environmental crime.”
“My ultimate goal is to see the end of plastic posters for elections,” concludes Cllr Gardner, “But in the meantime, my proposed plastic election poster tax to would help to reduce the problem.”
